Directing Philosophy

Every great theatre production begins with one thing: a strong foundation.  A cast and crew should operate as a team, and this is the baseline of my directing philosophy.  The rehearsal and performance space should be welcoming and safe for all members of the production, and it is the director’s responsibility to ensure that.  When every member of a production feels safe and comfortable, the best art can be made.

An actor and director should work together to give the best portrayal of the director's vision.  While the director is carrying out their vision, they should not feel superior to any other member of the cast.  A director should be open to creative ideas, especially when they come from their actors.

There are several questions I ask myself when choosing and analyzing a script. The most important questions being, why this show? Why this show now? Why not before or later? Why is this text important and who is it important to? Theatre, above all, is entertainment. But it can serve as something greater: A voice for the unvoiced, a shine of light in a dark corner. I want to direct theatre that will make an impact not just on me, but on another person or community.
